The Ovallia Lighthouse is the tower on the rocky shore of Ovallia that holds the Book of Water and houses the kingdom's Sacred Ruler, Lumikki Otsby.[1][2] It is the city's most famous sight, and Barnaby Britto knew it from guidebook photographs long before he saw it across the bay.[2]
The tower
From the beach the lighthouse sits like a king on a throne atop the rocky shore. Its marble tower is circled with blue rings and stands more than a hundred feet tall, its metal cupola gleams like fire, and its blue beacon shines brilliantly from the lantern room even in the midday sun.[2]
Lumikki calls it her lighthouse castle, and the waves break against its walls.[1][3] Steps climb from the entrance to her bedroom, where her Sacred Guard Harp takes up position outside the door. The room holds a bath, and a table in the corner by an open window where she and her brother Remidigon Otsby sat for tea on the last day of every new moon. The window gives straight onto open water: the sea serpent Trelluby pushes her head in at it to deliver the city's gossip, and Lumikki leaves the building by diving out of it.[1] There is a guest suite, which Remidigon has designs on.[4]
The Sacred Chamber
The Book of Water sits guarded within the lighthouse's chambers.[2] Bellbour Polindrad, the first Sacred Ruler of the Book of Water, received the power of water from Aezaros and made Ovallia an island set apart from the mainland so that the Book would be safe inside the walls of the lighthouse.[5] The books never take a reader into this Chamber, and nothing of its interior is recorded.
Government
Lumikki rules Ovallia from the lighthouse, though she hears her people in the town square rather than in the tower.[1] Looking at the slavery the Nelazgians had built at Veskadoth without her ever noticing, she wondered whether she had always been that oblivious tucked away in her lighthouse castle.[3]
Notable events
- Lumikki was poisoned in her own bath. A travelling merchant who claimed to live in Blighburrow had given her a jar of petals and green stones at her afternoon audience; she poured it into the water and collapsed. Harp made her drink dringrys, the serum drawn from fish guts and fed to gullys before long flights, and she brought the poison straight back up. He judged it poison because the water from the sink was clean.[1]
- She left the same night, diving from her bedroom window and riding a wave out to Morgaedion to look for her brother.[1]
- The Nelazgians invaded Ovallia while she was away.[6] What became of the lighthouse, and of the Book of Water inside it, is not recorded.
