The Hollow of Gewa is the Sacred Chamber of Blighburrow: a circular cavern inside the trunk of the great tree Gewa, where the Book of Land is kept.[1]
The hollow
The cavern is the size of a football field, or two, and its floor cannot be seen from the walkway that crosses it.[1] The Book is not simply stored inside the tree. Its energy courses through Gewa, over the city and the land, and travels down her roots to spread across the whole of Eslura. Alistair Archibald calls her the natural-born protector of his people and the home of the Book of Land.[1]
The approach
The hollow is reached from Blighburrow by a glass tunnel that runs hundreds of feet above the city's garden roofs and ends at Gewa's trunk.[1] Four towering figures of the Sacred Guard stand before a door cut into the bark, cloaked in green and masked in wood with only their emerald eyes showing, spiked wooden staffs in their gloved hands. A single nod from Alistair was enough to part them.[1] Behind the door the way narrows to a tunnel barely tall enough to stand in, its walls only far enough apart to take visitors in single file, before it opens out into the hollow.[1]
Government
The Chamber's shield admits nobody but the holders of Sacred titles, and Alistair Archibald says the Hollow of Gewa retains its power for as long as he is still breathing.[1][2] The Sacred Guard stationed at Blighburrow answers to its Sacred Ruler and to the Sacred Head.[1]
Notable events
- Alistair steadied Beatrice Tidal as she walked into the hollow after Demise clawed her wrist, drew the Book down with the light of his claws and had her lay her hand on its Heart. She was thrown into a vision of her mother and of the white-haired man from her dreams before she came back to herself on the platform.[1]
