Bestiary
Appearance
The creatures of Eslura: the beasts people ride, post letters by, are hunted by, and occasionally befriend.
Mounts and messengers
- Gullys
- Half bird, half cat, hand-sized, with long bushy tails and a call somewhere between a squawk and a meow. They track a recipient by scent and carry the post across all of Eslura.
- Florahorses
- Horses made entirely of dark green grass, with leaves for ears and vines woven with flowers for mane and tail. When they kneel they merge back into the ground and cannot be told from ordinary turf.
- Pergonzias
- Desert beasts like kangaroos, with floppy ears and a tail that splits near the end. The fastest animal in Eslura, though they tire under weight, and they will bolt from danger whatever the rider wants.
Beasts
- Night Hoppers
- Also called havarraks. Giant bear-and-rabbit hybrids with yellow eyes, a hunched back, an underbite full of yellow dagger teeth, and a pointed tail said to cut metal. They are used in the Varaar Colosseum — and they remember kindness. Aloeissa and Galabear are both known individuals.
- Drovigs
- Blind sandworms of the Kella Desert, marked with a star-shaped scar, sensing by vibration through their antennae, with three sets of jaws that snap side to side.
- Dragons
- Native to Galecrest and hatched only in the core of Alakyer. See also Dragon Cleansing.
Companions
- Olphin Toads
- A toad bonds with one Olphin once, and only once. Mauz is Barnaby Britto's.
