How articles on this wiki are written. These are conventions, not laws, but following them is what makes two hundred pages read like one book rather than two hundred.

== Voice ==

Articles are written '''from inside the world''', in the present tense, as though Eslura were a real place and this were its encyclopaedia.

: '''No.''' Bea is the main character of the Sacred series.

The exception is the '''Behind the scenes''' section at the foot of an article, which is the one place for anything about the writing rather than the world. Real-world articles (the novels, the author) are of course written normally.

Do not address the reader. No "as we saw in Book 1", no "you will remember".

== Structure ==

Every article opens the same way: an infobox, then a lead paragraph of one to three sentences that bolds the subject's name and says plainly what it is. A reader who stops after the lead should still have learned something useful.

Then sections, in a consistent order. For characters: Appearance, Personality, Background, Story, Relationships, Quotes, Behind the scenes, See also.

Close with a navbox and at least two categories: one structural, one specific.

== Tense ==

Present tense for description that is true across the series. Past tense for things that happened before the books open.

One mural survives, showing the four [[Sacred Rulers]] with their elements held out toward a [[The Five-fold Symbol|five-fold symbol]].

[[Beatrice Tidal]] destroys it, along with the city well, when her water power gets away from her. She rebuilds it later with land energy: a five-fold symbol grown out of vine and grass, golden petals opening across the whole of it. [[Alistair Archibald]] judges the new one better than the original.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 28.</ref>

It is after this that the community there begins to believe in her.

== The castle ==

[[Amelia Lunala]]'s old room is inside the ruined castle: a broken bed, a stained-glass window carrying part of the Sacred Symbol, and a wardrobe still holding [[The Sacred Cloak|the gold Sacred cloak]]. A half-broken mirror hangs there, and Bea sees her mother in it.

It is in this room that Bea puts on the cloak and her eyes turn from green to gold, and the castle begins to crack apart around her panic.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

By tradition the Sacred City is where a new [[Sacred Head]] trains. It is also where every line of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]] converges, which is why [[Obellius Kalaar]] is digging toward it.

Two things in this room matter beyond the Book. The walls carry a painted map of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]], every line converging on [[The Sacred City]]. And a hole the width of a semi-truck opens in the floor with a rope hanging into it, one of the tunnel network's entrances.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

The [[Hollow of Gewa]] lies inside the tree's trunk: a circular cavern the size of two football fields, crossed by a narrow walkway over a drop with no visible bottom. The Book floats at the far platform in a wash of green light.

Alistair calls it to him with a green glow from his claws. The Chamber's protections hold for as long as he lives.

== The Hearts ==

Each Book carries a crystal set into its spine, called its Heart. The Heart is what powers the Book. Remove it and the Book cannot even float; it rests on the ground, and its element falters across the whole of Eslura.<ref>Book 1.</ref>

[[Demise]] tore the Heart from the [[Book of Fire]] on [[Obellius Kalaar]]'s orders. The consequences were immediate and world-wide: the dragons of [[Galecrest]] lost their fire, and the shield around the Sacred Chamber fell.<ref>Book 1.</ref> The three remaining Books strain to cover the absence.

== Choosing a Ruler ==

A Book chooses its own Ruler, and the choice cannot be undone. [[Reagan Hideaway]] discovered this in [[Zybersia]] when she touched the Book of Fire: her hand was held fast, white lightning travelled up her arm, and fire came out of her palms.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 23–26.</ref>

'''The Sacred City''' was once the capital of [[Eslura]], the place where all four elements converged. It is now a field of rubble and skeletal buildings, with moss and weeds coming up between every tile.

A small community lives there still, in tents and lean-tos made from salvaged cloth.

One mural survives, showing the four [[Sacred Rulers]] with their elements held out toward a [[The Five-fold Symbol|five-fold symbol]].

[[Beatrice Tidal]] destroys it, along with the city well, when her water power gets away from her. She rebuilds it later with land energy: a five-fold symbol grown out of vine and grass, golden petals opening across the whole of it. [[Alistair Archibald]] judges the new one better than the original.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 28.</ref>

It is after this that the community there begins to believe in her.

== The castle ==

[[Amelia Lunala]]'s old room is inside the ruined castle: a broken bed, a stained-glass window carrying part of the Sacred Symbol, and a wardrobe still holding [[The Sacred Cloak|the gold Sacred cloak]]. A half-broken mirror hangs there, and Bea sees her mother in it.

It is in this room that Bea puts on the cloak and her eyes turn from green to gold — and the castle begins to crack apart around her panic.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

The city's rebuilt academy is run by [[Nindra]], chosen Primarch by a vote of her class, which she did not want. Its forbidden books section is where Nindra learned what she knows about the [[Eyearke Stone]].

A glass tunnel runs hundreds of feet above the rooftops toward Gewa's trunk, and it is by this that visitors reach the [[Hollow of Gewa]], the Sacred Chamber inside the tree. There is a greenhouse room given over entirely to plants.

Gewa is enormous. Green light seeps from the veins in her bark, and the Book of Land's energy travels through those veins and down her roots into every part of [[Eslura]]. She is not merely where the Book is stored; she is how it reaches the world.

Each Book carries a crystal set into its spine, called its Heart. The Heart is what powers the Book. Remove it and the Book cannot even float; it rests on the ground, and its element falters across the whole of Eslura.<ref>Book 1.</ref>

Beyond the settled land lie the prison island of [[Morgaedion]] offshore, the canyon city of [[Varaar]] beneath the northern desert, the peak of [[Alakyer]], and, across the water, the hostile territory of [[Veskadoth]].

Two moons cross Eslura's sky: one large and golden, one smaller and purple. When they eclipse, the golden covers the purple. That conjunction is the [[High Moon Festival]], the only occasion on which [[Galecrest]] descends from the sky and [[The Council]] convenes.

== Creation ==

A stone fell from the sky and was shared between the goddess [[Aezaros]] and the god [[Nelazgus]]. Aezaros used it to make the first five Eslurians. Nelazgus stole it and used it to make the [[Nelazgians]] in their image, but shaped by darkness and death.<ref>Book 1.</ref>

That stone is the [[Eyearke Stone]], and it remains the most dangerous object in the world: it can create, manipulate life, and call up all four elements. The [[Sacred Head]] is its intended bearer, as the true descendant of Aezaros.

The office had stood vacant since [[Amelia Lunala]] failed to cast [[Obellius Kalaar]] into oblivion, and was widely believed lost, until the five-fold symbol appeared on Beatrice Tidal's wrist.

== Peoples ==

The [[Eslurians]] are the descendants of Aezaros's first five. Alongside them live the [[Olphins]], a reclusive swamp people scattered after their kingdom at [[Treenode]] fell; the [[Trolls]]; and a great many talking beasts who hold office, run businesses, and command armies without remark. The [[Shifters]] were thought exterminated in the [[War of Shadows]], though some survived.

The [[Nelazgians]] are not of Eslura's making. They are spreading across it.
