== What this wiki covers ==

Published work only:

* ''[[Sacred: Eslura's Calling]]'': Book 1
* ''[[Sacred 2: Flames of the Awakened]]'': Book 2
* ''[[A Sacred Tale Collection]]'': the two short stories

If a fact does not appear in one of those, it does not belong in an article.

== What this wiki does not cover ==

'''Anything from an unpublished manuscript, outline, or series bible.'''

This includes Book 3 in every form: open plot threads, where characters end up, what Obellius is planning, who survives. None of it goes on the wiki: not in an article, not behind a spoiler banner, not in the Project namespace, not on a talk page.

The reason is simple and worth stating plainly: '''this wiki is readable by anyone on the internet.''' Editing is restricted to logged-in accounts, but reading is not. There is no private corner of this site. A note written "just for us" is a note published to the world.

Working notes for unpublished books belong in the author's own files, not here.

== Spoilers for published books ==

Covered in full. An encyclopaedia that will not tell you what happens is not much of an encyclopaedia.

Put {{Tl|Spoiler}} at the top of articles that turn on a late revelation, as a courtesy to a reader browsing casually. Then write the article completely.

== Speculation ==

None. Not in articles, not in "it is implied that", not in Behind the scenes. If the books leave something open, the wiki says it is left open and stops there.

== If you are not sure ==

Leave it out and ask. It is far easier to add a fact later than to un-publish one.

How articles on this wiki are written. These are conventions, not laws, but following them is what makes two hundred pages read like one book rather than two hundred.

== Voice ==

Articles are written '''from inside the world''', in the present tense, as though Eslura were a real place and this were its encyclopaedia.

: '''Yes.''' Beatrice Tidal is the current Sacred Head of Eslura.
: '''No.''' Bea is the main character of the Sacred series.

The exception is the '''Behind the scenes''' section at the foot of an article, which is the one place for anything about the writing rather than the world. Real-world articles (the novels, the author) are of course written normally.

Do not address the reader. No "as we saw in Book 1", no "you will remember".

== Structure ==

Every article opens the same way: an infobox, then a lead paragraph of one to three sentences that bolds the subject's name and says plainly what it is. A reader who stops after the lead should still have learned something useful.

Then sections, in a consistent order. For characters: Appearance, Personality, Background, Story, Relationships, Quotes, Behind the scenes, See also.

Close with a navbox and at least two categories: one structural, one specific.

== Tense ==

Present tense for description that is true across the series. Past tense for things that happened before the books open.

: Alistair Archibald ''is'' the Sacred Ruler of the Book of Land. He ''dismissed'' Amelia's warning until Bea arrived.

== Linking ==

Link the first mention of any person, place, or thing that has its own page. Do not link the same thing again three paragraphs later.

Prefer piped links that read naturally: <code><nowiki>[[Tabitha Glowdish|Tab]]</nowiki></code> inside a sentence about Tab.

Red links stay. They are the wiki's own to-do list.

== Citations ==

Any specific claim should carry a chapter reference.

<pre>
Her eyes shift from green to gold.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 14.</ref>
</pre>

Use the short form (''Book 1'', ''Book 2'', ''Collection'') and a chapter number where one exists.

== Spoilers ==

This wiki covers published work in full, and does not hide plot. Articles heavy with late-book revelations carry {{Tl|Spoiler}} at the top as a courtesy, but nothing is omitted for being a twist.

Unpublished material is a different matter entirely. See [[Project:Canon and spoiler policy]].

== Things to avoid ==

* Speculation. If the books do not say it, the wiki does not either.
* Fan theory, however good.
* Praise. "Beautifully written" belongs in a review, not an encyclopaedia.
* Second person.

SiteAdmin: Remove em dashes

This page assumes you have never edited a wiki before. Nothing here can break anything permanently. Every version of every page is saved forever, and any change can be undone in two clicks.

== Two ways to edit ==

At the top of every article there are two tabs.

; Edit
: A visual editor. It works much like a word processor: you type, and text appears. Use this one unless you have a reason not to.
; Edit source
: The underlying wiki markup. Useful for fiddly things like infoboxes and tables.

They both save to the same page. Switching between them is safe.

== Making your first edit ==

# Click '''Edit''' at the top of the page.
# Change something.
# Click '''Save changes''' at the top right.
# In the box that appears, write a few words about what you changed. Something like "added her Book 2 arc" is plenty. This is the edit summary, and it is what makes the page history readable later.
# Click '''Save changes''' again.

That is the whole loop.

== Linking to another page ==

Links are what turn a pile of pages into a wiki, so make them generously. A good rule: '''the first time an article mentions a person, place, or thing that has its own page, link it.''' After that, plain text is fine.

In the visual editor, select the words and press {{Key|Ctrl}}+{{Key|K}}, or use the link button in the toolbar.

In source, wrap the name in double square brackets:

<pre>
[[Aero Ellisvat]] handed her the blade.
[[Aero Ellisvat|Aero]] handed her the blade.
</pre>

The second form shows different text than the page title. Use it whenever the sentence reads better with a nickname.

'''A red link is not a mistake.''' It means the page does not exist yet. Red links are useful. They tell us what still needs writing, and they turn blue on their own the moment someone creates that page. Leave them.

== Citing a chapter ==

When you state a specific fact, say where it comes from. In source view:

<pre>
Her eyes turn gold when she takes the cloak.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 14.</ref>
</pre>

The article needs a references section at the bottom, once:

<pre>
== References ==
<references />
</pre>

This matters more than it looks. It is what lets you trust the wiki later when you are drafting and cannot remember whether something was established on the page or only in your head.

== Undoing something ==

Click '''View history''' at the top of any page. You will see every version, who made it, and when. Click '''undo''' beside any change to reverse it. Nothing is ever really lost.

== See also ==
* [[Help:Adding a new character]]: the fastest way to start a new page
Do not put a description in the title unless you have to. [[Gewa]], not "Gewa (tree)".

To make one, create the page and put only this on it:

<pre>
#REDIRECT [[Tabitha Glowdish]]
</pre>

== When a name is ambiguous ==

Three different things are called the Heart of the Kella: a cavern, a necklace, and a short story. When that happens:

* the plain title becomes a short page listing the options
* each real article takes a clarifying suffix in brackets: [[The Heart of the Kella (short story)]]
* every one of them carries {{Tl|About}} at the top, pointing at the others

Only disambiguate when there is a genuine clash. Most pages need no bracket.

== In-world versus real-world ==

Articles about the books use the published title exactly, including its series prefix: ''[[Sacred: Eslura's Calling]]'', ''[[Sacred 2: Flames of the Awakened]]''. Shorter forms redirect to them.

== The general rule ==

'''Write a fact where a reader would go looking for it, and link to it from everywhere else.'''

A detail about the Eyearke Stone lives on [[Eyearke Stone]]. [[Reagan Hideaway]] mentions that she carried it and links there. It does not re-explain what the stone is.

== Common cases ==

; A character's power
: The mechanics go on the power or artifact page. How ''that character'' uses it goes on their page.
; A place a character lives
: Described on the place's page. The character's page says they live there, and links.
; An animal companion
: Its own page if it has a name and does things: [[Mauz]], [[Egras]], [[Aloeissa]]. Otherwise a line on its owner's page.
; A creature species
: One page for the species, in [[Bestiary]]. Named individuals link back to it.
; Something that happens in one chapter
: The character's Story section, and the location's page only if the place itself is changed by it.
; How you decided to write something
: Behind the scenes, at the foot of the article. Never in the main text.

== When two things share a name ==

[[Heart of the Kella]] is a cavern, a necklace, and a short story. When a name is genuinely ambiguous, the plain title becomes a short page listing the options, and each real article gets a clarifying title in brackets.

== What does not belong on this wiki ==

Unpublished material. Plans for books that are not out yet do not go on these pages, in any namespace. This wiki is readable by anyone on the internet, whether or not they are logged in.
Use the character's full name: '''Tabitha Glowdish''', not Tab. Nicknames still work as links, because we set up redirects for them. Typing <code><nowiki>[[Tab]]</nowiki></code> will land the reader in the right place.
A five-fold symbol appears on her wrist, marking her as the new [[Sacred Head]].

What she arrives into is a crisis already underway. The Heart has been torn from the [[Book of Fire]], and the usurper [[Obellius Kalaar]] is moving to take back the throne he was imprisoned for.
'''The Sacred City''' was once the capital of [[Eslura]], the place where all four elements converged. It is now a field of rubble and skeletal buildings, with moss and weeds coming up between every tile.

A small community lives there still, in tents and lean-tos made from salvaged cloth.

== The mural ==

One mural survives, showing the four [[Sacred Rulers]] with their elements held out toward a [[The Five-fold Symbol|five-fold symbol]].

[[Beatrice Tidal]] destroys it, along with the city well, when her water power gets away from her. She rebuilds it later with land energy: a five-fold symbol grown out of vine and grass, golden petals opening across the whole of it. [[Alistair Archibald]] judges the new one better than the original.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 28.</ref>

It is after this that the community there begins to believe in her.

== The castle ==

[[Amelia Lunala]]'s old room is inside the ruined castle: a broken bed, a stained-glass window carrying part of the Sacred Symbol, and a wardrobe still holding [[The Sacred Cloak|the gold Sacred cloak]]. A half-broken mirror hangs there, and Bea sees her mother in it.

It is in this room that Bea puts on the cloak and her eyes turn from green to gold, and the castle begins to crack apart around her panic.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

== The academy ==
The city's rebuilt academy is run by [[Nindra]], chosen Primarch by a vote of her class, which she did not want. Its forbidden books section is where Nindra learned what she knows about the [[Eyearke Stone]].

== Significance ==

By tradition the Sacred City is where a new [[Sacred Head]] trains. It is also where every line of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]] converges, which is why [[Obellius Kalaar]] is digging toward it.
Silver buildings under white snow, spires reaching into low cloud, and several dozen windmills. The main street is hung with gold balloons and banners. A red brick plaza holds a gold dragon statue four storeys high.
Dragons ordinarily move through the clouds overhead as red, blue and green blurs. When they cannot fly, the city is worked by lift: an old wooden cage on cables as thick as tree trunks.
Obellius, on escaping [[Morgaedion]], came here and by his own account helped himself to Elmryn's wardrobe. He wears the ceremonial garnet cloak and carries Elmryn's staff.<ref>Book 2.</ref>
Down a marble staircase beneath the castle lies the Sacred Chamber, where the [[Book of Fire]] rests on the floor, unable to float, with a hole the size of a basketball where its Heart was.

Two things in this room matter beyond the Book. The walls carry a painted map of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]], every line converging on [[The Sacred City]]. The bridge into Ovallia carries a statue of [[Bellbour Polindrad]], the first Sacred Ruler of the Book of Water. Beyond it the sky is described as sparkling, and the market square stands on marble columns. Fishermen work the docks below, among wicker huts along the beach.
A glass tunnel runs hundreds of feet above the rooftops toward Gewa's trunk, and it is by this that visitors reach the [[Hollow of Gewa]], the Sacred Chamber inside the tree. There is a greenhouse room given over entirely to plants.
Millennium is a dragon shifter, taking the form of a purple-scaled serpentine dragon whose scales catch the sunlight. She commands a [[Sacred Guard]] in grey cloaks and dragon-shaped masks, led by [[Ferhant]].
The '''Book of Fire''' is the Sacred Book of [[Zybersia]]. Its Heart was torn out by [[Demise]] on [[Obellius Kalaar]]'s orders, the theft that begins the crisis of the series.<ref>Book 1.</ref> Without its Heart the Book cannot float; it lies on the floor of its Chamber with a hole the size of a basketball in its spine.
The loss was felt across all of [[Eslura]] at once. The dragons of [[Galecrest]] lost their fire. [[Alistair Archibald]] connects Obellius's fire-red irises directly to the missing Heart.<ref>Book 1.</ref> The Heart has not been recovered.

== Its Rulers ==

[[Elmryn]] held the Book before his murder. His daughter [[Reagan Hideaway]], raised on [[Earth]] and told her parents died in a car wreck, was chosen by it in the Sacred Chamber beneath his castle. Her hand was caught fast against it, white lightning ran up her arm, everything went red, and fire came out of her palms.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 23&ndash;26.</ref>
She is Eslurian by blood through her father, which is why the Book could choose her at all.
At the close of Book 2 the sea itself heals her broken arm, after she splits [[Calamity]] in half with a shot of water at the [[Veskadoth]] port.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 25.</ref>
The '''Book of Land''' is the Sacred Book of [[Blighburrow]], bound to [[Alistair Archibald]]. It rests inside [[Gewa]], the first sacred tree, and its power runs out through Gewa's veins and down her roots into every part of [[Eslura]].<ref>Book 1.</ref>

== The Chamber ==

The [[Hollow of Gewa]] lies inside the tree's trunk: a circular cavern the size of two football fields, crossed by a narrow walkway over a drop with no visible bottom. The Book floats at the far platform in a wash of green light.
[[Beatrice Tidal]] draws land energy after contact with the Book: green light from her palms, roots that answer her, grass that moves at will.<ref>Book 1.</ref> Touching it also restores her [[The Five-fold Symbol|Sacred symbol]], lifting it from brown back toward gold.

She later uses that power to rebuild the mural in [[The Sacred City]]: a five-fold symbol grown from vine and grass, with golden petals opening across it.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 28.</ref>
== The Hearts ==

{{Main|Hearts of the Books}}

Each Book carries a crystal set into its spine, called its Heart. The Heart is what powers the Book. Remove it and the Book cannot even float; it rests on the ground, and its element falters across the whole of Eslura.<ref>Book 1.</ref>

[[Demise]] tore the Heart from the [[Book of Fire]] on [[Obellius Kalaar]]'s orders. The consequences were immediate and world-wide: the dragons of [[Galecrest]] lost their fire, and the shield around the Sacred Chamber fell.<ref>Book 1.</ref> The three remaining Books strain to cover the absence.

== Choosing a Ruler ==

A Book chooses its own Ruler, and the choice cannot be undone. [[Reagan Hideaway]] discovered this in [[Zybersia]] when she touched the Book of Fire: her hand was held fast, white lightning travelled up her arm, and fire came out of her palms.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 23&ndash;26.</ref>

Each Book is kept in a Sacred Chamber within its kingdom: inside the trunk of [[Gewa]] at Blighburrow, in the [[Ovallia Lighthouse]], beneath [[Elmryn's Castle]] in Zybersia. A Chamber's protections hold as long as its Ruler lives.
'''The Sacred City''' was once the capital of [[Eslura]], the place where all four elements converged. It is now a field of rubble and skeletal buildings, with moss and weeds coming up between every tile.

A small community lives there still, in tents and lean-tos made from salvaged cloth.

== The mural ==

== The castle ==

It is in this room that Bea puts on the cloak and her eyes turn from green to gold &mdash; and the castle begins to crack apart around her panic.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

{{Quote|You must control your emotions! The castle will collapse.|Alistair Archibald|Book 2}}

== The academy ==

The city's rebuilt academy is run by [[Nindra]], chosen Primarch by a vote of her class, which she did not want. Its forbidden books section is where Nindra learned what she knows about the [[Eyearke Stone]].

== Significance ==

By tradition the Sacred City is where a new [[Sacred Head]] trains. It is also where every line of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]] converges &mdash; which is why [[Obellius Kalaar]] is digging toward it.
When they cannot fly, the city is worked by lift &mdash; an old wooden cage on cables as thick as tree trunks.
A citadel sits at the head of a staircase of thousands of steps, overlooking everything. [[Elmryn's Castle]] rises in ancient sandstone, red against the blue, its towers high above the empty streets.

Obellius, on escaping [[Morgaedion]], came here and by his own account helped himself to Elmryn's wardrobe. He wears the ceremonial garnet cloak and carries Elmryn's staff.<ref>Book 2.</ref>
Down a marble staircase beneath the castle lies the Sacred Chamber, where the [[Book of Fire]] rests on the floor &mdash; unable to float, with a hole the size of a basketball where its Heart was.

Two things in this room matter beyond the Book. The walls carry a painted map of the [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]], every line converging on [[The Sacred City]]. And a hole the width of a semi-truck opens in the floor with a rope hanging into it, one of the tunnel network's entrances.<ref>Book 2.</ref>
Blighburrow is nearly invisible from above. Its roofs are gardens, and Gewa's canopy shields the whole city from direct sun, so that what one notices first is not buildings but green.

A glass tunnel runs hundreds of feet above the rooftops toward Gewa's trunk, and it is by this that visitors reach the [[Hollow of Gewa]], the Sacred Chamber inside the tree. There is a greenhouse room given over entirely to plants.

== The stolen Heart ==

{{Main|Hearts of the Books}}

The loss was felt across all of [[Eslura]] at once. The dragons of [[Galecrest]] lost their fire. [[Alistair Archibald]] connects Obellius's fire-red irises directly to the missing Heart.<ref>Book 1.</ref> The Heart has not been recovered.

== Its Rulers ==

[[Elmryn]] held the Book before his murder. His daughter [[Reagan Hideaway]] &mdash; raised on [[Earth]] and told her parents died in a car wreck &mdash; was chosen by it in the Sacred Chamber beneath his castle. Her hand was caught fast against it, white lightning ran up her arm, everything went red, and fire came out of her palms.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 23&ndash;26.</ref>

She is Eslurian by blood through her father, which is why the Book could choose her at all.

The walls of the Sacred Chamber in Zybersia carry a painted map of Eslura's tunnel network. Every line on it leads to [[The Sacred City]].<ref>Book 2.</ref>

== The Chamber ==

The [[Hollow of Gewa]] lies inside the tree's trunk: a circular cavern the size of two football fields, crossed by a narrow walkway over a drop with no visible bottom. The Book floats at the far platform in a wash of green light.
Alistair calls it to him with a green glow from his claws. The Chamber's protections hold for as long as he lives.

She later uses that power to rebuild the mural in [[The Sacred City]] &mdash; a five-fold symbol grown from vine and grass, with golden petals opening across it.<ref>Book 2, Ch. 28.</ref>
== The Hearts ==

{{Main|Hearts of the Books}}

== Choosing a Ruler ==

'''Eslura''' is a world of four elemental kingdoms, each governed by a [[Sacred Rulers|Sacred Ruler]] bound to one of the four [[The Sacred Books|Sacred Books]]. The Books' energy is what sustains the land itself; should all four fail, Eslura dies with them.<ref>Book 1.</ref> At the centre of the four kingdoms stand the ruins of [[The Sacred City]], once the capital where all four elements converged.
</div>

Eslura is reachable from [[Earth]] through [[The Cave Portal|a cave portal]] in the woods near [[Camp Tossbridge]]. It is by that route that [[Beatrice Tidal]] arrives, and is chosen as [[Sacred Head]].

== Geography ==

Eslura is an island continent. Its four kingdoms sit at the compass points of a broad interior, with the ruined Sacred City between them. Beyond the settled land lie the prison island of [[Morgaedion]] offshore, the canyon city of [[Varaar]] beneath the northern desert, the peak of [[Alakyer]], and, across the water, the hostile territory of [[Veskadoth]].

The [[Veskadoth Tunnel System]] is being dug beneath all of it. Every mapped line leads to the Sacred City.<ref>Book 2.</ref>

=== The four kingdoms ===

<div class="sw-tiles">
<div class="sw-tile sw-land"><h3>[[Blighburrow]]</h3><p>Kingdom of Land. A city hidden under garden rooftops, in the shadow of the great tree [[Gewa]]. Ruled by [[Alistair Archibald]].</p></div>
<div class="sw-tile sw-water"><h3>[[Ovallia]]</h3><p>Kingdom of Water. An oceanside city of marble and fishing docks, watched over by a lighthouse. Ruled by [[Lumikki Otsby]].</p></div>
<div class="sw-tile sw-air"><h3>[[Galecrest]]</h3><p>Kingdom of Air. A silver city that floats in the clouds on chains. Ruled by [[Millennium Loftwind]].</p></div>
</div>

=== The two moons ===

{{Main|The Two Moons}}

Two moons cross Eslura's sky: one large and golden, one smaller and purple. When they eclipse, the golden covers the purple. That conjunction is the [[High Moon Festival]], the only occasion on which [[Galecrest]] descends from the sky and [[The Council]] convenes.

== Creation ==

A stone fell from the sky and was shared between the goddess [[Aezaros]] and the god [[Nelazgus]]. Aezaros used it to make the first five Eslurians. Nelazgus stole it and used it to make the [[Nelazgians]] in their image, but shaped by darkness and death.<ref>Book 1.</ref>

That stone is the [[Eyearke Stone]], and it remains the most dangerous object in the world: it can create, manipulate life, and call up all four elements. The [[Sacred Head]] is its intended bearer, as the true descendant of Aezaros.

== Government ==

{{Main|Sacred Head|Sacred Rulers}}

Each kingdom keeps its Book in a [[Sacred Chamber]], and each Ruler commands a [[Sacred Guard]] distinguished by the masks and colours of their kingdom. Above the four Rulers stands the [[Sacred Head]], who holds authority over every Guard in Eslura.

The office had stood vacant since [[Amelia Lunala]] failed to cast [[Obellius Kalaar]] into oblivion, and was widely believed lost, until the five-fold symbol appeared on Beatrice Tidal's wrist.

== Peoples ==

The [[Eslurians]] are the descendants of Aezaros's first five. Alongside them live the [[Olphins]], a reclusive swamp people scattered after their kingdom at [[Treenode]] fell; the [[Trolls]]; and a great many talking beasts who hold office, run businesses, and command armies without remark. The [[Shifters]] were thought exterminated in the [[War of Shadows]], though some survived.

The [[Nelazgians]] are not of Eslura's making. They are spreading across it.
